Money Chicha is an Austin, Texas based group featuring members of the Grammy-award winning Latin orchestra Grupo Fantasma and its offshoot funk outfit Brownout which performs a fuzzed-out, reverb-drenched and percussion-heavy style of music inspired by the sounds of Peru and Colombia in the 60s and 70s. This style of music, sometimes called “chicha” music, is known for its infectious Latin beat, its psychedelic, surf guitar pyrotechnics and its melodies influenced by the indigenous culture of the Andes mountains.
José Luís Carballo es el creador del estilo musical llamado chacalonero en el Perú. por sus composiciones, su guitarreo inigualable y las letras de sus canciones, interpretadas por la voz del gran “Chacalon”, llegaron al corazón del pueblo, para ungirse como los máximos exponentes de la música tropical peruana, llamada chicha.
Kiko Villamizar was born in Miami to Colombian parents and was taken to the Andean city of Medellin, Colombia when he was small and raised there. He learned Latin American folk music through the oral tradition of his family and then went back to Miami to study jazz after high school. Then he began traveling the Americas collecting
melodies and beats that he has formed into his own unique mix.
